I’d like to introduce my friends who co-authored this article on the four agreements. Jamie and Karen Baker, who both work in the financial industry. They are really good people. I think you will enjoy what they have to share with you today.
Is Life a Dream?
Yes, it is. As I started reading The Four Agreements written by Don Miguel Ruiz, I immediately connected with his idea of our lives being a dream. According to Ruiz, we buy into the dream that is presented to us by our parents, our families, our worlds from the beginning. In essence, we have accepted the belief system handed to us. To change your life, you have to break away from the dream that you have been given your “whole” life and create a new one. Throughout our lives, we are sold the dream of others, of society, but not necessarily our own dream. A dream that brings us happiness and joy as ourselves. This path is not easy. You have naysayers on the sidelines shouting, “Wait, don’t change! We love you just the way you are” or “You can’t do that.” When you hear those words, hit pause and then move forward.Sometimes we allow our fears to get in the way of changing our dream. To make the transition to your own dream, you have to deal with the fear. A way to deal with the FEAR is to see it as “False Evidence Appearing Real.” When you start changing the dream, just know that you will feel uncomfortable, but you need to press through this uncomfortable feeling.
Where do you start? You start by looking yourself in the mirror and asking the following:
• Am I living my dream or someone else’s?
• What do I believe about myself?
• What do others think of me and does it matter to me? If it does matter, why and
• What are my fears? Am I ready to confront my fears?
• What roadblocks have I allowed to exist and keep me from my dream?
• Am I challenging my belief system every day?
• Does my current belief system support me in a healthy way?
• What steps will I take to make my own dream?
For me, I playfully say, “Life is but a dream” with a big smile to remind myself that it is a dream that can be changed. The Four Agreements author challenges us to review our belief system and live our dream. Remember, as the dreamer, you get to choose your dream. Whenever you feel that you are not in alignment or the challenges keep piling up, just think about the classic “Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream. Keep rowing my friend.
